Component Tinning
component

Superior Flux has many years experience working to solve component tinning challenges. This is reflected in the variety of different fluxes that have been formulated to meet the specialty requirements of soldering processes for tinning copper, nickel, alloy 42, alloy 51, kovar, brass, and other base metals.

With the conversion to Lead-Free Superior Fluxes will conform to a variety of different Lead-Free solders of Sn/Cu, Sn/Ag/Cu and other combination alloys being used for lead tinning applications.

Superior fluxes are organic-acid (OA) based, water-soluble, halide-free, VOC-free and alcohol-based.

Safety and Environmental Tip: Superior Flux offers a wide variety of VOC-free fluxes for component lead tinning. We also carry a wide selection of halide-free fluxes. Superior No. 435 (3:1) is an excellent choice for lead-free component tinning applications.

PRECLEANERS

  • Superior Preflux Cleaner – Copper: A non-hazardous copper cleaner that removes oxides at ambient temperature or when heated.

  • Superior Preflux Cleaner – Nickel: A high activity metals cleaner that removes oxides from nickel and nickel based alloys including alloy 42 and alloy 51.

ROSIN FLUXES
Rosin fluxes have been the standard in soldering for more than a century. These products are based upon abietic acid, found in gum rosin, and are available in three types
  1. Type R (Rosin). A combination of Water White (WW) Gum Rosin blended with solvent.

  2. Type RMA (Rosin Mildly Activated). A blend of WW Gum Rosin, a low activity activator, and solvent. Meets most military specifications.

  3. Type RA (Rosin Fully Activated). A blend of WW Gum Rosin, a high activity activator, and solvent. For applications needing highest activity.

While these fluxes have been the reliable standard for many years, the cleaning requirements for rosin fluxes typically involved freon® or trichloroethane 1:1:1. With the implementation of the Montreal Protocol, many processes have shifted from CFCs to HFCs, aqueous, and No-Clean fluxes.

Superior rosin fluxes conform to Mil-F-14256F.

Superior No. 97 Type R is a non-activated flux formulated for soldering copper. Residues are non-corrosive, non-conductive, and completely safe for delicate electronic assemblies.

Superior No. 99 Type RMA is a mildly activated flux that contains no chlorides.
It becomes active at 163°C/325°F and reaches peak activity in the 205°C/400°F– 285°C/540°F range with 63/37 and 60/40 tin/lead solder. For higher lead-containing solders, used for burning off insulation from mag-wire, No. 99 is an excellent choice for coils, bobbins, and transformers where soldering takes place at 300-450°C. Residues are non-corrosive at room temperature and may be left on soldered parts.

Superior No. 100 Type RA is an activated rosin flux using an organic, chloride activator in a multi-solvent system. It becomes active at 163°C/325°F and reaches peak activity in the 205°C/400°F– 285°C/540°F range with 63/37 and 60/40 tin/lead solder. This flux is an excellent choice for high lead alloys used at high temperature, 300-450°C.

Different solids contents in the above fluxes are available.
Also available are Tara 120 Rosin Flux and RFE Rosin Flux formulations.
